About Us

A Glorious 198-Year Tradition of Reading Culture

The present library was originally established in 1828 on a small scale under the name Konkan Book Society. It is one of the few oldest libraries in Maharashtra and is, in fact, considered the oldest library in the state. In 1850, the library was renamed and reorganized as the Native General Library, and it continued under that name until 1888. During this period, British officials wished to become members of the library. However, the presence of the word “Native” created difficulties for their membership. Consequently, the word “Native” was removed, and the institution was renamed simply as the General Library, after which British officials became members. Later, during the period of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s internment in Ratnagiri, he suggested the name Nagar Vachanalaya (Municipal Library). Subsequently, in 1951, the library was officially renamed Ratnagiri (District) Nagar Vachanalaya (Ratnagiri District Municipal Library). This name has remained in use ever since.
